How Blobun Did

🦊Howdy! I'm here to answer the burning question that everyone's had since the game released: how did it do? Did we make money? Did people like it? This post will answer all of this, and more!

Note: All numbers in this post were current as of March 25th, 2025. If you're reading this way in the future, these numbers are old now.

Reviews

First, I wanna talk about reviews.  Before the game came out, the demo was available on Steam for Next Fest (and a little bit before.) In that time, it got 37 reviews - all positive! Before then, it was also on itch in early access, and in the time it's been available on itch, it's gotten 41 ratings, putting it at a solid 5 stars (5.0) Now, since the game was launched on Steam, it's gotten 77 reviews, which were also all positive!

Overall, the game in its various forms has gotten 155 reviews, with all of them being solid positive. That's incredible! You guys have really let us know that yea, we made a good game here.

How Many Blobuns?

So, figuring out how many Blobuns are out there is a little trickier, because of the various ways you could get the game. We've done our best to get the numbers together, but this can't count people who potentially bought it twice. However, these numbers don't include people who bought it on itch and then redeemed it on Steam - Steam tells us how many keys were redeemed this way, so we'll only include those in the itch number.

For the demo version of Blobun, we saw 470 downloads on itch, and 3778 downloads on Steam. That's a lot!  The full version got 2059 itch downloads, and 501 Steam downloads, which means that most people who got the game were eager to play it right away.

On itch, 143 people bought the game outright, while 1984 people added it to their library  through the California Wildfire Relief bundle. About 55 people redeemed it through Patreon or Kofi (it's slime time!) and the game has found itself in 719 collections on itch.

Meanwhile  on Steam,  602 people bought the game! The game also garnered 4623 wishlists total, with 221 deletions, 291 conversions, and 4111 outstanding. Including the people who got Steam keys through other means (ie. key with purchase on itch,) the total number of units is 720. If you're wondering about refunds, only 10 people refunded it. Steam says that's 1.7%, which is *very* low! (We're not pressed about refunds btw, Blobun isn't for everyone)

So, it's hard to say just how many Blobuns are out there now, but the sum of the Blobuns through itch and Steam well exceeds  2500. Stephanie is out there touching a lot of tiles!

Are We Rich Now?

Not really! Some people have done calculations and come up with numbers that are close to what we have, but we'll just go ahead and talk about them outright here.

First, the itch sales. Gross itch purchases is $1,635, but bear in mind that the game was available in Early Access for a while, so most of that was spent long ago - same as money earned through Patreon and Kofi. We *did* get a few hundred when launching the game on itch though, but most players were keen on waiting for the Steam version to release. People really did come together to help us get this game out there though, and while I won't break down *all* the numbers from Kofi/Patreon (because it's very fuzzy how much of that was specifically for Blobun, and how much was just to support us in general) I will say that a lot of suspiciously wealthy furries really helped us out, and we'll forever be grateful!

Alright, let's talk about Steam. Gross payments on that is $8,381, with the net being $7,574. That's a lot of money! So we should be good to buy that Playstation 5 now, right? Unfortunately, it's not that simple. Let's go through it:

  • $5301 - Amount of money we estimate we'll get after Valve takes their cut.
  • $2801 - Amount we're estimating after we pay last year's taxes (still haven't done our taxes yet, don't tell the IRS - we had enough fun with them last year)
  • $1740 - Amount we estimate we'll have after setting up to pay estimated tax for this year (so far.)

So, out of all that money, we end up getting about $1740, provided absolutely no one else buys a copy between now and whenever Valve pays out. That, combined with Patreon, will be enough to get us through a few months  paying rent and bills if we stretched it out. So yea! It's a lot of money, but it goes away fast. However, we know how to be responsible with it, so it should be alright. And, summer sales will be here before we know it...

The Takeaway

I think the big takeaway here is, a lot of people will probably look at these numbers and go "wow, that's not a lot." But when considering that we have no publisher, no marketing guys, no big internet presence or anything, and just posted this out there hoping people would see it, I think it did really well! That and, the people who *did* see it, were really into it. Overall, we're proud of the product we made, and it seems that everyone agrees that it's really high quality. The amount of nice things people have sent us has been heartwarming, and that's really what it's all about. Not "oh wow we made this much" or "we sold this many copies" or whatever, but that people were touched by what we made and that they really liked it.

As we look toward the future, we're gonna keep updating the game for a little while more, adding in new and missing features, and overall polishing the game and adding a little more content. But, unless the word really starts getting out there about it, we probably should soon turn our focus to another game. What will it be? We haven't decided yet, but hopefully you'll all be there for the ride.

From all of us to all of you, thank you again!

🦝heck yea, I hope you enjoy it whenever you get around to it!

I “purchased” the game here on itch via the Cali Fire Relief bundle, but I do intend to pick up the game on Steam later for my own convenience (Steam Deck, etc.) and to support you! (Sadly, I haven’t played the game yet, as my backlog is piled high!)

I will help spread the word about the game, though! Congrats on the successful (IMO) launch!

🦊heck yea! we have no obligations to any publishers or anything, and also people supporting us online financially is a big part of what got this game made, so we wanted to share all of this because yea, no one ever talks about it
